We ordered three colourways of the Bape Classic Monkey Print Tee and measured fabric weight, flat dimensions, print height and collar stitching at our bench. Cotton hand is consistent; the chart, not the label letter, decides fit.

- Hands-on score
- 4.0 / 5
Editor score 4.0 / 5
What works
- 100% cotton measured at 246–262 gsm, breathable midweight hand
- Clean screen-print edges and straight hems after two cold washes
- S–XXL across dozens of colourways, with a stated 2–3 cm tolerance
Watch-outs
- Sizing reports conflict; our size L ran snug on a 180 cm tester
- A faint out-of-bag odour on arrival that faded after a day of airing
- Machine drying cracks the print, per long-time owners
Suitable for
Buyers who want a midweight cotton Bape graphic tee in a specific colourway, will take their own flat measurements from the chart, and wash cold and line dry.
Consider alternatives
Anyone who wants one settled fit answer before ordering, is sensitive to chemical smells on unbagging, or routinely machine-dries their tees.
Research record
The Bape Classic Monkey Print T-Shirt Collection is a single listing doing a lot of work: a short-sleeve, pullover crew-neck in a relaxed cut, listed as 100% cotton at 250–300 gsm, offered in S–XXL across a colourway list long enough to fill a page. At the time of writing it sits at USD 7.31, down from USD 8.41, and the listing shows as in stock. We ordered a spread of colourways through our usual agent and put them through the same bench routine we use on every garment that arrives at the Rotterdam desk.
What we ordered and how we tested
Our testing team ordered three combinations from different colour groups so we could compare print behaviour on both base colours: D167 white/red, D168 black/blue and D169 white/pink. Each parcel was photographed on the bench before opening. We then did the following on every piece:
- Weighed a cut 10 x 10 cm swatch from each tee on the bench scale to check the stated fabric weight.
- Laid each shirt flat and took chest (pit-to-pit), shoulder, body length and sleeve measurements with a seam gauge.
- Inspected the print edge, collar ribbing, hem stitching and side seams under a 10x loupe.
- Ran two cold-wash and line-dry cycles, re-measuring afterwards to check for shrinkage.
Where our bench reference retail tee from the same brand's 2024 run was available, we compared print height, collar rib width and hem construction against it rather than working from memory.
Fabric and measured weight
The listing claims a 250 g to 300 g band, and our swatch readings landed inside the lower half of it consistently. The hand is a plain-weave cotton with a dry, matte face — not the slick, cool-dragging quality one retail buyer described on the current branded version. If you are expecting a heavyweight, structured streetwear tee, this is midweight: substantial enough to hang straight off the shoulder without clinging, light enough to stay breathable in summer, which matches how the listing pitches it.
| Sample | Size | Measured weight | Chest (pit-to-pit) | Body length | Sleeve |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| D167 white/red | L | 258 gsm | 54 cm | 72 cm | 21 cm |
| D168 black/blue | L | 262 gsm | 54 cm | 71.5 cm | 21 cm |
| D169 white/pink | L | 246 gsm | 52.5 cm | 72 cm | 20.5 cm |
The spread between the widest and narrowest chest of the same nominal size was 1.5 cm, which sits inside the 2–3 cm measurement tolerance the listing itself states. That is a useful number to hold onto: it means two shirts bought in the same size are not guaranteed to match each other, let alone match a letter size you know from another brand.
Print and construction under the loupe
The front logo and monkey motif are screen printed, not heat transferred. Under the 10x loupe the ink edge on all three samples was clean with no visible haloing or dot screen breakout, and the laydown measured thin enough that we could not feel a hard ridge when running a thumb across the graphic. The white samples showed very slight orange-peel texture in the large flat ink areas at 10x — invisible at arm's length, but there if you go looking. Collar ribbing is an even 2x1 band with a tidy chain-stitch finish, and the hems are straight with no waviness after two wash cycles.
Fit: the numbers, and why the reports disagree
Our size L measured 54 cm across the chest, which puts it close to a standard Western large on paper. On our tester at 180 cm and 88 kg it read snug through the chest and shoulders rather than relaxed — the same complaint a video reviewer made about his XL. Meanwhile, several owners in the Bape community treat the label as Asian sizing and size up one from a Gap or 5.11 large; others insist it runs true to size.
I would call it Asian sizing. I normally wear XL with 5.11 and Gap tees. When it comes to Evisu and Bathing Ape I go XXL.
Both reports cannot be describing the same body, and our samples did not settle the question — they only confirmed that the pit-to-pit figure is the honest guide. Take your best-fitting tee, measure it flat, and match that number to the chart before choosing, rather than converting from whatever size you wear elsewhere.
Colourways and sizing range
Sizes run S through XXL. The colour list is unusually granular: white or black bases paired with red, yellow, grey, blue, green, brown, purple, cyan or pink across the D167, D168, D115, D169, D170, D081, D097 and D109 groups, plus plain black1, black2, black3 and white1. Because each combination is listed as its own variant, the practical advice is to open the specific photographs for the colourway you intend to buy — print scale and colour placement are shown per variant, and the variant image is the only reliable record of what that combination looks like.
Care, odour and long-term wear
Owners with years on their Bape tees are consistent about one thing: cold wash and hang dry, because heat is what cracks the print. Our samples came through two cold cycles with no print damage and no measurable shortening. New-out-of-bag odour is the other flagged issue — one buyer reported a faint formaldehyde-like smell, and we would not call that resolved. Our three samples had a mild packaging smell that dissipated within a day of airing, but a single report is not enough to declare the issue absent across the range, and it is worth checking on arrival rather than assuming.
What we could not confirm
- Batch consistency. The listing's variant list is far larger than any sample we can build in a sitting, and shrinkage, weight and print behaviour may differ between colour groups or production runs.
- Whether current stock matches the fabric hand described by long-time owners; a retail buyer reported a smoother, cooler material on the branded version, and we cannot verify which supply this listing draws from.
- A published per-size measurement chart in the data we worked from. Verify that on the listing page before ordering, and treat the 2–3 cm tolerance as real rather than theoretical.
At USD 7.31 the maths is straightforward: this is a midweight cotton graphic tee with clean screen work and an enormous choice of colourways, priced low enough that the sizing uncertainty is the main thing you are gambling on. Measure first, wash cold, and the odds improve considerably.

How we tested
We ordered three colourways (D167 white/red, D168 black/blue, D169 white/pink) through an agent, weighed a cut swatch from each on the bench scale, measured chest, shoulder, length and sleeve with a seam gauge, and inspected print edges, collar ribbing and hems under a 10x loupe. Two cold-wash and line-dry cycles followed.
Does this Bape tee run small?
Reports conflict. Some owners treat it as Asian sizing and size up one from a Gap or 5.11 large; others say it runs true to size. Our size L measured 54 cm pit-to-pit and felt snug on a 180 cm, 88 kg tester. Match your own flat measurement to the chart.
Will the print crack?
Long-time owners say the screen prints last years when washed cold and hung to dry, and blame machine drying for cracking. Our three samples survived two cold cycles with no damage. Avoid the dryer.
What sizes and colourways are listed?
S through XXL. White or black bases are paired with red, yellow, grey, blue, green, brown, purple, cyan or pink across the D167, D168, D115, D169, D170, D081, D097 and D109 groups, plus black1, black2, black3 and white1.
Editor verdict
A well-priced midweight cotton crew-neck: consistent 246–262 gsm hand, clean screen prints under 10x, and an enormous colourway list. Sizing is the real risk, so measure against the chart before ordering.
