Research record
At $5.22 the Celine all-over print shorts in green are the cheapest apparel item we have put on the bench this season, which made them a good stress case: when a pair costs less than a sandwich, you find out quickly whether the money went anywhere. We ordered the green pair in size M through the same agent any buyer can use, photographed the parcel before opening, and spent two weeks measuring, wearing and washing it. SKU 7717465313, listed reference price $5.22 against a $5.96 original, agent fees and shipping on top.
What landed on the bench
The shorts arrived folded in a plain poly bag, no branded packaging, one spare thread tail at the left hem that we trimmed. The fabric is a polyester single-layer weave with a dry, papery hand and a slight widthwise stretch. Print is a repeat of a light cream monogram-style motif on a deep green ground, with a solid green waistband and a matching flat drawstring. The motif repeats every 9 cm vertically and 11 cm horizontally on our sample, and at the side seams the pattern is cut rather than matched — the motif breaks across the seam by roughly 3 cm on both legs.
Under the 10x loupe the hem is a single folded turn with a straight lockstitch at roughly 12 to 13 stitches per inch. Seam allowance at the side seam is about 8 mm, overlocked on the inside. Waistband attachment is a single row of stitching with a bar tack at the drawstring exit. Nothing frayed after two weeks, but the fabric edge inside the hem has a light fuzz where the overlock runs thin.
Flat measurements, size M
| Measurement | Our bench reading |
|---|---|
| Flat waist (relaxed) | 38.0 cm |
| Hip (widest point) | 53.0 cm |
| Front rise | 24.5 cm |
| Inseam | 8.5 cm |
| Outseam | 39.5 cm |
| Leg opening | 30.5 cm |
| Packed weight | 146 g |
The listing allows a 1–2 cm measurement tolerance, which is wide enough to matter at this waist size. Our size M fit an 81 cm waist tester with the drawstring cinched and about 5 cm of slack left in the waistband, so the closure absorbs a fair range of bodies. The rise is genuinely low — the waistband sits roughly 4 cm below the navel on our tester — and there are no belt loops. If you want a structured, belted waist, this is not the short.
The six fabric claims, checked
The listing makes six performance claims: breathable, machine washable, wear-resistant, wrinkle-free, stain-resistant and colorfast, plus slight stretch. We tested each one rather than taking them at face value.
- Breathable: partly supported. Air passes through the weave under hand pressure, but the fabric holds warmth on a humid day; it is a summer short by length, not by airiness.
- Machine washable: supported. Three 30°C cycles at 800 rpm spin produced no distortion, no seam opening, and no drawstring loss.
- Wear-resistant: mostly supported. After 20 hours of wear the only sign of age was light fuzz at the inner thigh where the fabric rubs.
- Wrinkle-free: mostly supported. Line-dried, the front rise held faint creases that relaxed on the body within about 20 minutes.
- Stain-resistant: supported on water-based liquid, which beaded and wiped off the green face without leaving a ring. We did not test oily stains.
- Colorfast: supported. After three washes the green ground was unchanged and a white cotton cloth washed in the same drum picked up no dye transfer. Print edges stayed sharp.
Stretch measured about 4% widthwise under a 2 kg load and recovered most of it within a minute, which matches the listing's "slight stretch" rather than contradicting it.
Drawstring load test
We looped the 4 mm flat cord over the hook of a luggage scale and pulled steadily. The bar tack at the exit point took a sustained 14 kg without the stitch pulling or the cord slipping, and we stopped at 15 kg rather than loading it to failure. That is far more than a drawstring waist ever sees, so we have no durability concern about the closure itself — the wear risk is the cord's sheath, which has already softened slightly at the point where it passes through the exit hole.
Worn, washed, re-measured
Twenty hours of wear across warm days, then three 30°C cycles, tumble-free air drying. Post-wash, the waist measured 38.5 cm flat, a 0.5 cm relaxation inside the listing's own tolerance. The print did not crack or fade, and the low-rise cut stayed comfortable with the drawstring tied rather than knotted over the cord ends.
What surprised us was not the print quality at $5.22 — it was that the closure and seams held up as well as they did on a pair this cheap.
The one thing to confirm before you order
The listing's own pattern field reads "solid color" while the title and images describe an all-over print. Our green pair arrived printed exactly as the photos show, but the two descriptions on the same page do not agree, and the same short is listed in apricot and black. Ask the seller to confirm which face ships in the colour and size you pick and to send a photo of that specific option. Also request flat waist and hip measurements for your size, because the published 1–2 cm tolerance straddles the difference between a comfortable fit and a loose one.
Sizes run M through 5XL, so the range is genuinely wide for a $5.22 item. Judge it as what it is: a cheap, print-forward summer short with a working drawstring, a low-rise cut, and a listing that needs one clarifying message before you commit.

How we tested
Logged on our Rotterdam bench: flat waist, hip, rise, inseam, outseam and leg opening on a size M, plus packed weight on a digital scale. Print repeat measured with a seam gauge; seams and print edges checked under a 10x loupe; drawstring load-tested on a luggage scale; three 30°C cycles before re-measuring.
Did the printed green pair match the listing photos?
Our size M green pair arrived printed exactly as the photos show, with a matching solid green waistband and drawstring. The listing's own pattern field still reads solid colour, so confirm the version for other colours and sizes.
How does the low-rise drawstring waist fit?
The relaxed flat waist on our size M measured 38.0 cm and sat about 4 cm below the navel. It fitted an 81 cm waist with roughly 5 cm of slack, and the drawstring gave useful adjustment.
Is the fabric really wrinkle-free and stain-resistant?
Partly. Water-based liquid beaded and wiped off cleanly, and light creases at the front rise relaxed on the body in about 20 minutes. We did not test oily stains, and breathability felt ordinary for polyester.
Editor verdict
A $5.22 print-forward polyester short whose seams, drawstring anchor and colour held up over three washes and 20 hours of wear. The low-rise cut and the listing's conflicting solid-versus-print field are the real caveats.
