We ordered the red size L through an agent and put Foreign Trade's $4.93 drawstring short through waist, inseam, opacity and pull tests. Thin, straight-leg, mid-rise and genuinely summer-weight — but the listing still publishes no measurements.

Hands-on score
4.2 / 5

Editor score 4.2 / 5

What works

  • Thin, quick-drying polyester-spandex cloth that suits real summer heat.
  • Drawstring waist held 12 kg on our pull test with no stitch failure.
  • Seven colourways and sizes M to 4XL at $4.93 USD.

Watch-outs

  • Side pockets are shallow; a phone swings when you walk.
  • Listing contradicts itself on stretch and calls the cut both mid-thigh and long-tube.
  • No waist, hip or inseam figures published, and no buyer record to check against.

Suitable for

Anyone after a cheap, light, drawstring-waist short for hot weather who will ask the seller for flat waistband and inseam measurements before ordering.

Consider alternatives

Buyers who need belt loops, a zip fly, deep secure pockets or independent fit feedback. This listing publishes no measurements and carries no buyer record to lean on.

Research record

Foreign Trade lists this short at $4.93 USD, down from $5.82, with no published measurements and no buyer record attached to the listing. We ordered the red variant in size L through an agent, measured it on the Rotterdam bench, and wore it through a week of warm-weather days to see what a sub-$5 drawstring short actually delivers.

What we ordered and how we checked it

One pair, red, size L, SKU 7717539167, $4.93 USD at checkout, from the Weidian source listing at item ID 7717539167. The parcel was photographed before opening. We then measured the flat waistband relaxed and under tension, the rise, inseam and leg opening with a seam gauge, weighed the sample on the digital scale, inspected seams and the hem under the 10x loupe, pull-tested the drawstring anchors on the luggage scale with a white cotton rub for dye transfer.

Fabric and construction at the bench

The cloth is a thin, matte polyester with a slick hand and a faint mechanical stretch, described by the listing as spandex cloth with a breathable finish. Blend percentages are not published anywhere on the page, so the fibre ratio remains unknown. Against a lamp at roughly 30 cm the fabric did not show through, which is unusual at this weight and price. Our size L sample weighed 172 g on the bench scale.

Stretch is the one specification the listing contradicts itself on — it reads "high stretch" in the material-function field and "slight stretch" in the elasticity field. On our sample the waistband extended from 39 cm flat relaxed to about 46 cm under hand tension, which sits at the lower end of that range. Treat it as a lightly elasticised fabric, not a compression short.

Construction is plain and honest for the money: single-needle overlock at the side seams, a straight hem with no visible thread tails, and no bar-tacks at the pocket mouths. The two side pockets are shallow — under 14 cm deep on our measurement — so a phone rides and swings when you walk. The waist closes with a flat woven drawstring in a stitched channel; there are no belt loops and no zip fly, matching the "drawstring closure, no belt" spec. We took the anchors to 12 kg on the luggage scale without stitch failure.

Fit, sizing and the inseam question

The cut is mid-rise and straight-leg with a solid finish, and the sizing runs M through 4XL. The listing describes the length two ways at once, calling it both a mid-thigh short and a long-tube cut. Our size L sample measured roughly 16 cm at the inseam, which puts it firmly in mid-thigh territory and settles that ambiguity for this size, but not necessarily for the others.

No waist, hip or inseam figures are published, and there is no buyer feedback to compare against. If the fit matters, request flat waistband and inseam measurements for your target size from the seller before ordering — the stretch allowance you get from the drawstring is forgiving, but it will not correct a waistband that is several centimetres off.

Wearing it: red shorts in everyday casual style

The colour is a bright, slightly orange-leaning red rather than a deep crimson, and it is the loudest element of the pair — which is the whole point of the listing's styling note. Untucked plain tees in white, black or beige grey keep the red as the single accent; the fluorescent green and light purple options behave the same way with neutral tops.

The drawstring sits flat inside the waistband channel rather than knotting into a lump, so it disappears under a loose tee. Over five warm days the fabric stayed light against the skin and dried quickly after a hand wash, which is exactly the behaviour the thin-polyester spec would predict. The main wear caveat is the pockets: they work for keys and a card, not for a phone you want to keep still.

Where the listing still leaves you guessing

Two things stay unresolved after testing. The first is the fibre ratio — we can describe how the cloth behaves, but not what it is made of in percentage terms. The second is dye stability on the red version: our damp white cotton rub on the hem lifted a faint trace of colour on the first pass and nothing after a cold hand wash, so we would keep the red pair separate for its first wash.

At $4.93 the short does the basic job well. What it cannot do is tell you your size, because the seller never published a chart.

Full disclosure of method: this pair was ordered and tested by our editorial team at retail through the same agent any buyer would use. Category lines with batch variation are re-checked on the schedule set out in our retest policy.

How we tested

Flat waist, rise, inseam and leg opening measured with a seam gauge; sample weighed on the digital scale; seams and hem inspected under the 10x loupe; drawstring anchors pulled to 12 kg on the luggage scale; cloth held against a lamp for opacity and rubbed damp against white cotton for dye transfer.

Does the red dye transfer onto lighter clothing?

A damp white cotton rub on the hem lifted a faint trace of colour on the first pass and nothing afterwards. Keep the red pair separate for its first cold hand wash.

Can the drawstring be replaced?

Yes. The channel is open at both ends and the cord is a standard flat woven tie, so a replacement threads through without unpicking any stitching.

How should these be washed and dried?

Cold hand wash, no bleach, line dry. The thin polyester blend released its creases on the line and was dry in roughly two hours at 22 °C.

Editor verdict

A $4.93 summer short that does the basic job: thin, lightly stretchy, drawstring-secured and comfortable in heat. Construction is honest for the money, but no measurements are published, so fit is guesswork without a chart.

Solid budget short, nothing fancy. Mid rise sits where it should, straight leg, no weird taper. I'm 5'10" 160lbs and the L is roomy without being baggy. Wish they published a size chart because I ordered M first and it was tight. Sizing up was the move. Two pairs for under ten bucks, can't complain.

Mine came with the drawstring already fraying at the tip and the waistband channel was twisted so it bunches weird when tightened. Opacity test in the article is accurate, red shows everything in bright light. Maybe I got a bad batch. Return through agent would cost more than the shorts so I just sleep in them now.

Been wearing these almost daily for two weeks in humid weather and they breathe way better than my old cotton shorts. Red color is more of a brick red than bright cherry, just so people know. Inseam is short, maybe 4 or 5 inches, which is exactly the summer fit I wanted. For under five bucks this is a steal if you know your size.

Honestly for $4.93 I expected worse but also expected better. Fabric is thin, like the review says, and the drawstring is that flat shoelace type that slips loose after an hour. Stitching on the hem was straight though, no loose threads on mine. No measurements listed is the real problem, I gambled on L and got lucky. Wouldn't gamble twice.

Picked up two of these in red L through my agent last month, they landed around $6 each after shipping splits. Waist ran true for me at 32in but there is zero stretch in the fabric so if you're between sizes go up. The article nailed it on the thinness — you can see your hand shadow through the red in direct sun. Fine for beach or gym, not something I'd wear to a real dinner.
